Communication and Expression Skill Training Is Gradually Taking Shape at SPC
Helping students improve their communication and expression skills in various real-life scenarios has long been a key focus of Shiu Pong College’s efforts to address students’ genuine needs. In the 2025–2026 academic year, in addition to the traditional Communication Skills Certificated Course, the College introduced new programs—Public Speaking Certificated Course and Contest—as its curriculum framework gradually takes shape.
On February 1, 2026, the annual “Communication Skills Certificated Course” was held once again. Mr. Victor Hu, a renowned critical thinking instructor, focused on analyzing and practicing communication strategies and techniques for two specific scenarios, which are how to communicate with bosses or supervisors to protect one’s own interests, and how to handle unreasonable requests from others. In the end, 26 participants completed the three-hour training and received certificates.
Building on the “Communication Skills Certificated Course,” the College launched its first Public Speaking Certificated Course and Competition this semester, further strengthening its communication and expression training framework. Participants were required to complete two sessions in March totaling three hours, guided by Dr. Phoenix Chan, resident fellow of SPC, covering “Fundamentals of Presentation Skills” and “Using Generative AI for Presentation Aids.” After completing the course, participants joined the Public Speaking Competition in April, presented to the College academic team, critical thinking instructor, and college students, to earn the completion certificate.
On April 10, 2026, the inaugural Public Speaking Competition was successfully held. The judging panel included Prof. TAM Sik Chung, Interim Master of the College, Mr. Victor Hu, a critical thinking instructor, and Dr. Phoenix Chan, the course instructor. Contestants delivered a six-minute prepared speech in a language of their choice on the theme “Optimizing or Establishing Student Organizations in the College.” A total of six students participated, and TU Hongyu won the championship, LI Yutong received the 1st runner up, and ZHANG Yiqing received the 2nd runner-up.
Following the above activities, some students expressed their appreciation to the college, noting that these activities had effectively enhanced their soft skills and were highly beneficial for their career development.
