“Collective Memory and Generational Identity” at the YUNA International Student Symposium 2018

On March 14, led by Prof. Kenneth Leung, Prof. Joaquim Kuong and Mrs. Andrea Leung, 9 SPC students visited Chinese University of Hong Kong to give a presentation on “Collective Memory and Generational Identity” at the 2018 YUNA International Student Symposium.

YUNA International Student Symposium has been held for over twenty years at New Asia College of the Chinese University of Hong Kong. This annual event provides a platform for students from Yale University of the United States, New Asia College of the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) and Shiu Pong College (SPC) of the University of Macau to share their academic research findings on various topics as well as to engage in culture exchanges.

Same as last year, SPC was invited to be one of the three presenting groups. Before the symposium, the 9 selected SPC students had put a lot of effort into the 3-months preparation for the March 14 presentation by conducting survey research and writing reports, from which PPT files were generated. To figure out the relationship between collective memory and generational identity among Macau citizens, 8 historically significant events such as 2014 Protest against Government’s Retirement Package Bill, December 3 Riot in 1966 etc. were selected for conducting the empirical study. On-site interviews had been conducted at the campus and parks in Macau in order to collect comprehensive data.

At the symposium, 4 members of the SPC team presented first. They were followed by four presentations each from students of Yale and CUHK team. After listening to all presentations, participating SPC students said that they found out interesting differences in the collective memory and generational identity among the three regions.

The symposium ended at 5:30 p.m. Former Director of Yale-in-China Association Mr. Mark Sheldon commented that the SPC presentation was “Excellent”.

“YUNA was a great experience for us to have deeper understanding of American culture, as well as to communicate with students from top-notch universities ……We are very grateful that Shiu Pong College provides us such a valuable opportunity to participate in this program” said all participating SPC students.
