Short Film Production Workshop — “The Charm of Film Editing”

On the evening of October 26, 2015, Macau director Teng Teng Wong, an independent filmmaker spoke to the students of Shiu Pong College in a short film production workshop on a topic called “The Charm of Film Editing”. The great number of attendees revealed the enthusiasm of students on “storytelling” with a camera. The skill of “storytelling” is what every student should acquire and telling a story with images and sounds is a new approach.

Director Teng Teng received her bachelor and master degree from Beijing Film Academy. She participated in the production of many films, including “Beijing met Seattle.” When the students asked why she chose to become a film director, she said that it was out of a simple aspiration to document the story of her grandmother with a camera.

In the workshop, Teng Teng not only explained why filmmaking is an art and the importance of film editing, but also recounted how she struggled to pursue her dream alone in Beijing when she was 17 years old. Students were deeply moved by her vision and pursuit of dream.

Postgraduate student Edward Lin was also deeply touched by Teng Teng’s long years of persistence in pursuing to realize her dream, he said,

“I am interested in many things and I can learn quickly. However, my passion oftentimes does not last. Once I was fascinated by and really enjoyed the pleasant sound of a piano. I hoped that one day I would be able to study in a professional music college. Nonetheless, I gave it up due to the obligatory, unpalatable practice every day. Later in life, I was very fond of badminton and found that my swiftness made me a good badminton player. By self-learning, I was admitted to the school badminton league. Nevertheless, I dropped the pursuit after discovering the league’s unscrupulous practices. Now, I am in love with photography, not for stunning the world with my photos, but simply for making a record of each cheerful face. Because of this simple motive, I will not give up this time.”

“I agree with what Wong said, ‘the deeper you go, the more you are interested, and the more you want to learn.’ Before picking up photography, I thought it was just simply pressing a shutter. Now I realize that even the most basic skill of photo composition can make the feel of a photo completely different. This new knowledge makes me desire to learn more. Now, I have a simple dream — to preserve the smiles and beauties around me in photos and in my memory.”
