SPC Overseas Summer Program – Experiencing American Culture

(June 28 – July 12, 2016)

 

After 15 days of English learning and immersion in American culture in Eugene, Oregon, United States, 16 students from Shiu Pong College returned to Macau, filled with resonant memory from the trip, which was full of fun and enjoyable learning experience from activities such as language and leadership classes, cultural tours, landmarks visitation and living with local American family in homestay. Students enjoyed it so much that all of them recommended that this trip should be organized again next year and 87% of the students wanted to stay longer.

Besides indoor classes for learning English language, leadership and American culture at Northwest Christian University, students also got opportunities to participate in cultural tours and activities for an experience of the American life, such as the Independence Day celebration, rodeo event, whitewater rafting, outlet mall shopping, blueberry picking, etc. Students also visited the Lava Land, a site for seeing volcanic landscape, and the Pacific coast. The adrenaline pumping white water rafting which allowed students riding in a raft along The McKenzie River with rapids roaring around and crystal clear water splashing on their face, was rated as the most enjoyable activity.

Students’ English language skills were improved and cultural experience was enriched effectively by immersing in an all-English environment. Students reported that living with an American family for a 4-night & 5-day homestay was particularly helpful in getting the in-depth experience of local lifestyle as well as learning English.

Jose Wang, a freshman majored in Portuguese Studies, claimed that he enjoyed the English learning environment very much. Winnie Wang, a freshman from Business Administration, claimed that she enjoyed greatly the time with the host family. She had been impressed by and learnt a lot from their friendly, positive attitude towards others.

This overseas summer program was organized the second time by SPC. Prof. Kenneth Leung, Master of Shiu Pong College, hoped that students would take advantage of the precious opportunity to improve their English language skills and bring the intensive English learning atmosphere back to Shiu Pong College where a favorable English learning environment, can be created and maintained.

體驗美國本土文化 書院學生赴美交流之旅

從6月28日到7月12日，經過15天沉浸在美國俄勒岡州全英語美國文化裡的學習交流之旅後, 澳門大學紹邦書院十六名學生滿載著旅程的寶貴經驗和回憶返回澳門。旅程的豐富活動包括語言和領導課程、文化遊歷、名勝探訪和在當地人家中寄宿4晚5天。學生們都樂而忘返，每一個都同聲建議明年應該再次舉辦此行，而且有百分之八十七的學生希望日數能更長一點。

旅程中，學生除了在當地西北基督教大學學習英語、文化以及領袖課程外，還參加了多種美國文化體驗項目，當中包括慶祝美國獨立日、參與西部傳統鬥牛活動丶直銷中心購物、採摘藍莓、白浪漂流等。學生們還參觀火山熔岩土地和太平洋海岸線。當中最受學生歡迎的是白浪漂流，在橡皮艇上沿著美麗的河流漂駛，感受周圍急湍的咆哮和清澈的河水濺在臉上，被學生評為最愉快的活動。

通過在全英語環境和美國文化下的沉浸，學生在英語能力跟文化參予上，都得益非淺。在學生的報告中，評述說在當地美國家庭寄宿和生活的經驗，讓他們能深入體驗美國的文化生活，學會與不同文化背景的人相處。就讀大一工商管理的王楚桐同學表示十分享受和寄宿家庭相處的日子，感受到美國人民積極友善、熱愛自然的生活態度。就讀大一葡語專業的王涵讓同學認為這次旅程除了提高他的英語能力之外，還深深體驗到美國英語文化的魅力。

這次由紹邦書院舉辦的美國語言及文化交流之旅已至第二屆，梁偉賢院長表示希望學生可以借此機會來提高英語表達能力，並將這種學習英語的氛圍帶回紹邦書院，創造及維持一個良好的英語學習環境。
