Taiwanese Pianist Hsu Hse-chen brought His Piano Music with Life Story Sharing to SPC residents

On the evening of October 18, 2015, Mr. Hsu Hse-chen, a young gifted blind pianist from Taiwan, brought his great piano music with life story sharing to Shiu Pong College residents. The Master of SPC Prof. Kenneth Leung, Resident Fellow Dr. Shanyi Sun, College Fellow Prof. Liu Naihua and more than 50 students participated. Hse-chen was greeted with a storm of applause and the participants were deeply moved by his wonderful music and splendid life story.

Hsu Hse-chen was born congenitally blind in 1986 in Keelung, Taiwan. He began to practice piano since he was a child. He had won the third prize in Taiwan International Chopin Piano Competition and had studied piano performance in Austria. The event was orchestrated with an amiable and interactive style so as to facilitate face to face communication between the pianist and students. During the performance, Hse-Chen played a number of famous pieces of music including “Fantaisie-Impromptu” and “Heroic Polonaise in A flat major Op 53” by Chopin, a traditional Taiwanese flock “Tee O O” (Dark Sky), a popular song “You Are My Guiding Eyes” and his original song “The Expectations of My Heart.” SPC students also performed at the event. Zhang Weiwei, a girl from Hunan province, Mainland China performed “Piano Quartet No. 1 in G minor, op. 25” by Brams. Another girl, Lam U Tong , from Macau, performed “Grace Dance”. The concert was graced by these performers from the greater China.

As a visually disabled pianist, the music of Hse-chen exhibits an exceptional power from his inner being, which brought a wonderful musical experience to the SPC students. With piano solo, songs accompanied with piano music and narration, Hse-chen shared his life story and learning experience, with which he encouraged students to adhere to their own dreams. “Never give up and stick to what you love,” he said. He also demonstrated how visually disabled people could operate smart phone. He skillfully navigated Facebook, succeeded in photographing and posting a message, made a video call through WeChat, and finally played one of his concert videos for the audiences. All these had dumbfound everyone at the event. They were shocked by the contribution of science and technology towards human well-being.

The sharing was successfully closed with laughter and applause. All the participants enjoyed it and regarded it as a great educational experience. Hse-chen was also touched and grateful for the support and affirmation from SPC residents. Hse-chen expressed that he would like to “share his life stories and inspirations with further efforts and sincerity in the future”.
