Seminar talk at Shiu Pong College – Will Huawei Phones be Limited Edition?

Huawei is one of the largest smartphone makers in the world. However, due to the restrictions of essential components from America and its allies, Huawei’s survival is now an open topic of discussion. On November 9, 2020, Professor Mo Huang from Institute of Microelectronics was cordially invited to deliver a seminar talk on “Will Huawei Phones be Limited Edition?” More than 60 students attended the event.

With a warm welcome and introduction from Professor Benzi Zhang, Master of Shiu Pong College, Professor Huang introduced the topic by reviewing the political controversy of Huawei, challenging students to think about how U.S.’s restrictions on Huawei has affected its development. He then disassembled the Huawei phone, introduced the components and their manufacturers and compared the chip making technology of different tech giants. The seminar was summed up by suggesting possible ways for Huawei’s survival.

Aiming to popularize cutting-edge scientific technology among students and enhance their interest in scientific research, SPC has organized a seminar-talk series on a vast range of topics. These topics include: the misconceptions and truth of artificial intelligence, the development of stem cells and cloning technology and the application of big data analytics in healthcare.

華為是全球領先的智能手機生產商之一。隨著美國向華為頒佈禁令，華為手機主要部件的供應受到限制，全球聚焦華為如何化解有關危機。二零二零年十一月九日，澳門大學微電子研究院黃沫教授應邀主持｢華為手機將成絕版嗎？｣專題講座，從技術角度剖析華為當前面對的窘局，吸引約六十名同學參與。

講座先由紹邦書院張本梓院長致歡迎辭。隨後，黃教授回顧華為的相關事件及爭議，引發參與者思考為何美國一聲令下，便可左右華為的發展。然後，他通過拆解華為手機，介紹機體的組件及其製造商，以及比較不同科技巨頭最新的芯片製造技術。最後，黃教授提出華為解決危機的關鍵方法，在於提升自有工藝技術，擺脫對進口產品的依賴。
